So, what is hypnosis?

There is a huge mythology about hypnosis. Rather than being a state where people can be made to do things against their will as suggested by watching stage and TV hypnotists, clinical hypnosis used by therapists sets a frame of mind that may be influenced by beneficial suggestions. When used correctly, hypnosis is totally safe. You never feel that you are in a ‘trance’.

Instead, a pleasant and deep level of relaxation is experienced. The feeling resembles a light slumber. Far from being asleep, the person experiencing hypnosis may feel a state of heightened attention, in which they still have overall control of their thoughts.

Contrary to popular belief, you are awake, aware and fully conscious.

Whether the hypnosis is self-induced or applied by another person, everything that takes place is remembered clearly. When a person is in therapeutic hypnosis some basic things happen:

1. Memory is enhanced.

2. Acceptance of beneficial and positive suggestions is increased.

3. Other senses (hearing and smell) are much more acute, hence you will hear everything that goes on and everything that the therapist says.

4. The state of mind that is induced by the hypnotist is a very pleasurable, relaxing experience.

5. The awareness of time passing becomes distorted.

Hypnosis is based on the deep relaxation of the mind and body. Hypnotherapy is the use of that state of mind to bring about positive change.
